Postdoc position at the Technology Platform for Hydraulic Machines
Job description
A postdoc position is available at the Technology Platform for Hydraulic Machines at EPFL, Switzerland. Since 1969, PTMH ( ptmh.epfl.ch ) has been a centre of scientific excellence in research and development of hydraulic machines, specializing in performance validation, hydrodynamics, cavitation, hydro-acoustics, numerical simulations and advanced measurement techniques. This postdoc position is part of a collaborative project HYPERTENSION with SBB Energy.
Hydropower is a cornerstone of the Swiss railway power supply system, ensuring reliable and resilient operation of the railway grid. The SBB hydropower fleet, largely composed of high-head Pelton turbines, operates under highly flexible and dynamic conditions. While such flexibility is essential for grid stability, it is expected to induce significant fatigue damage in hydraulic machine components, leading to accelerated aging, increased maintenance needs, and higher risks of unplanned outages. The goal of this project is to investigate fatigue-induced damage mechanisms in Pelton turbine components, to model and predict their remaining useful life using both analytical and data-driven approaches, and to integrate these models with real-time monitoring and digital twin data from SBB hydropower plants.
As a postdoc, you will be expected to:
- Perform original research in the field of hydraulic machinery and fluid-structure interaction modelling.
- Lead and contribute to publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Participate in laboratory research activities

- Solid background in mechanics and turbomachinery.
- Experience in data-driven modelling is considered an asset.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
- Enthusiasm, scientific curiosity, good organizational skills.
We offer
- Opportunity to perform state-of-the-art research in one of the most dynamic scientific institutions in Europe.
