About the job
University Clinic for Forensic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy
from 1 December 2026 or by arrangement
Are you an assistant physician in training for the specialist title in psychiatry and psychotherapy and wish to deepen your knowledge in an exceptional outpatient role? At the University Psychiatric Centre (UPZ) Bern, you have the opportunity to work in the exciting field of forensic psychiatry, a discipline at the intersection of psychiatry, medicine and justice. You will care for mentally ill individuals with a criminal law title (especially Art. 63, Art. 59) who live freely. What they all have in common is that they suffer from a chronic mental illness and have committed offences. Some of these individuals live in closely supervised residential homes, others in their private environment. Your duties include treatment with psychotropic drugs as well as disorder- and offence-oriented psychotherapy. Regular exchanges with the authorities take place. You will be professionally closely connected to our experienced forensic team and receive senior physician supervision. The interdisciplinary collaboration with justice, nursing and social services as well as the broad spectrum of disorders offer you valuable insights.
Your tasks
- You care for mentally ill people who have committed offences in our outpatient clinic
- You are responsible for carrying out medication and psychotherapeutic treatment including documentation under specialist supervision
- You work medically independently and at the same time are closely connected to the forensic psychiatric specialist team
- You will become familiar with a diverse range of disorders – often under exceptional conditions
- You collaborate on an equal footing with justice authorities, nursing, social work and security personnel
- You have the opportunity to actively participate in expert reports over time and further develop your forensic expertise
Your profile
- You are in training for psychiatry and psychotherapy and have at least 2 years of inpatient clinical experience
- You want to complete your outpatient time specialising in forensic psychiatry
- You hold a medical diploma recognised in Switzerland; for foreign diplomas, MEBEKO recognition is mandatory
- You are resilient, decisive and able to act calmly and empathetically even in complex situations
- You are interested in legal issues as well as interdisciplinary collaboration
- You have very good German skills (level C1); any additional language is welcome, French preferred
