Laboratory and Field Assistant 80% (m/f/d)
The research unit Forest Health and Biotic Interactions investigates the influence of biotic and abiotic factors on forest health and develops scientific foundations for the protection of the forest and its biodiversity. The group Forest Protection Switzerland is looking for a temporary position starting March 2026 or by agreement for 2 years (with option to extend):
You are responsible for the care and maintenance of the laboratories (pathology and entomology) of Forest Protection Switzerland and ensure the sorting and initial diagnosis (fungi and insects) of various samples. Isolating and cultivating microorganisms, as well as the careful preparation of various harmful organisms (arthropods, fungi, bacteria, etc.) are among your skills. Furthermore, you are responsible for the laboratory support of sampling and experiments. The preparation of samples (wood, insects, and fungi), documentation, and maintenance of our collections (entomology and pathology) are also part of your duties. Since we work with quarantine organisms, you often work in the biosafety laboratories (level 2 to 3) at WSL in Birmensdorf.
You have a university degree (Master or Bachelor) in natural sciences and are familiar with cultivating microorganisms and/or identifying/sorting insects. Experience in forest pathology and/or forest entomology is an advantage. You are an extremely service-oriented team player with good communication skills. Manual dexterity, as well as a precise, independent, and structured way of working, are also among your strengths. Essential requirements are that you enjoy working outdoors and have good physical fitness so that you can move safely on steep slopes. In addition, you are proficient in German and preferably have knowledge of French. Furthermore, you possess a category B driving license.
