Particularité
The Department of English at the University of Fribourg seeks to hire a doctoral assistant (assistant-e diplômé-e) working in the field of American Literature under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Michael Boyden. The preferred starting date of the position is 1 January 2026 and the duration of the contract is 5 years, the first six months being probationary. To foster work-life balance, the university allows for the possibility to work at 80.

The working language of the department is English.
Applications should contain a letter of interest detailing the applicant’s motivation and qualifications for this job, an academic CV (listing conference papers and publications, where applicable, as well as diplomas and certificates), the names and contact details of two referees who know the work of the applicant well, a writing sample of 10 pages as well as the research proposal for their Ph.D. dissertation (including a reference list; c. 5-7 pages total).

Apart from pursuing research on a doctoral project, the successful candidate will be expected to teach one two-hour seminar at BA level per semester. They will also support Prof. Boyden in research and take on some administrative tasks for the department.
Exigences
Applicants should hold an MA in American Literature (or equivalent) and be able to document an excellent academic track record. Ideally, the applicant has written an MA thesis on American Literature as part of their MA degree. They should submit a persuasive research proposal for their Ph.D. Projects that contribute meaningfully to the fields of the environmental and health humanities are particularly welcome, but the call is not restricted to these areas.
The successful applicant is expected to have excellent written and oral English skills. They should enjoy teaching and be willing to participate in academic activities led by Prof. Boyden (e.g., workshops, conferences, publications). A high level of dedication and self-motivation is required as well as willingness to pursue independently diverse activities related to an academic position (e.g., publications, conference presentations, outreach projects).
