About the job
How we finance our work
We are able to carry out our numerous activities in Switzerland and abroad thanks to the financial support of various public and private partners. The costs of some services are partly covered by client contributions. In addition, we carry out assignments entrusted to us within the framework of public service mandates.
Swiss Red Cross Headquarters
The activities of the Swiss Red Cross Headquarters are usually financed as follows:
one third from private donations and sponsorships;
one third from public service mandates;
one third from contributions from other organizations (Solidarity Chain, SRC Humanitarian Foundation, other Red Cross organizations) and own income.
During the Covid-19 pandemic and following the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, private donors demonstrated immense solidarity. As a result, the contribution from private donations temporarily increased.
As the only recognized Red Cross Society in Switzerland, we receive an annual general contribution from the Confederation for the services we provide. The Swiss Red Cross does not receive any other state subsidies.
Swiss Red Cross Association
The cantonal associations and Red Cross rescue organizations are legally independent associations. For information on funding, please consult the respective annual financial statements.

Private support
Individuals, foundations, companies, as well as cantons, cities and municipalities financially contribute to our services and projects in Switzerland and abroad or to our activities in general. Companies also support us through sponsorships.
Our collaboration with companies is based on guidelines consistent with the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross. We subject potential partners to a thorough review.
Public support
Service mandates
The Swiss Red Cross carries out specific activities for the Confederation and the cantons within the framework of service mandates. For example, it deals with the recognition of foreign diplomas and certificates in the health sector. Swiss SRC Transfusion ensures, on behalf of the Confederation and together with the 10 regional transfusion services, the supply of blood products for hospitals. In the Canton of Uri, the local cantonal association is responsible for assistance and reception of asylum seekers and refugees. Several cantonal Red Cross associations carry out other public activities on behalf of cantonal authorities within the framework of service mandates.
Contributions from the SDC
The Swiss Red Cross is financially supported in the implementation of its projects abroad by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). Together they contribute to realizing Switzerland's international cooperation.
Own income
Some of our services are chargeable. Since we apply socially fair rates, the income often does not cover the expenses. That is why we partly finance these services through donations.
Contributions from other organizations
Solidarity Chain
The Swiss Red Cross is one of the 25 accredited humanitarian partner organizations of the Solidarity ChainOpens in a new window. Together with the SSR, it collects donations for people affected by crises and disasters, such as extreme weather events or armed conflicts. Collaboration with the Solidarity Chain also allows us to engage in the reconstruction phase after a disaster.
SRC Humanitarian Foundation
The SRC Humanitarian FoundationOpens in a new window is a public utility foundation of the Swiss Red Cross that exclusively supports humanitarian projects and activities of the Red Cross and Red Crescent organizations.
