As of February 1, 2027 or the next possible date, a professorship for Archaeology of the Roman Provinces is to be filled at the Institute for Archaeological Sciences of the Philosophical-Historical Faculty of the University of Bern.
The person to be hired is internationally recognized in research and teaching. A broadly based research profile in the archaeology of the Roman provinces with a focus on the northern and western provinces is expected. A temporal focus on the earlier epochs is desired, with special attention to transformation processes. Solid expertise in empirical and digital research methods is an advantage. The person represents the archaeology of the Roman provinces in teaching across the entire temporal and methodological spectrum. The person to be hired is internationally recognized in research and teaching, has experience in university didactics, archaeological field research, personnel management, and has experience in acquiring third-party funding.
Collaboration within the institute and the new department is expected, as well as cooperation with national agencies and cantonal archaeology offices. Willingness to collaborate with other faculty institutions and university research centers is also desired.
For an appointment to a full or associate professorship, a habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements must be demonstrated; for hiring as an assistant professor with tenure track, a well-advanced habilitation project or equivalent achievements are required.
Ability and willingness to teach and supervise in German are required. If the ability to teach and supervise in German is not already present, it is expected to be acquired within two years.
