About the job
Company Description
At CERN , the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Job Description
Introduction
You will work at the interface between electronics development and operations, contributing to the full lifecycle of electronic boards and test equipment used in CERN’s large-scale power converter systems.
Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will help ensure that electronic systems are reliable, testable, maintainable and well documented. You will also contribute to continuous improvement of testing methods, quality processes and long-term sustainability of electronic assets.
Functions
- Design and develop analogue and digital electronics for production and repair test fixtures, from schematics and printed circuit board (PCB) layouts, ensuring compatibility with software and firmware.
- Be responsible for the full lifecycle of test equipment, ensuring high availability and maintaining complete technical documentation.
- Contribute to design for repairability and testability by analysing failure modes, sharing findings, and collaborating with development teams to integrate test and repair requirements into future designs.
- Act as technical point of contact for external repair teams, supporting and performing repair operations, organising activities and defining priorities to ensure long-term reliability of electronic assets.
- After appropriate training, you will also join our stand-by team, participating in interventions on operational power converters.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Electronics Engineering or a related field.
Experience:
- Experience in analogue and digital electronics design and development, including printed circuit board layouts.
- Relevant experience in electronics testing, troubleshooting and fault analysis and related processes.
- Exposure to software development used in electronics testing or control systems is an asset.
Technical competencies:
- Testing and measurement of analog electronic circuits, including a functional understanding of Microcontrollers software and FPGA gateware to facilitate comprehensive system-level hardware validation.
- Design of analogue and digital electronic circuits utilising industry-standard tools (e.g. Altium Designer).
- Knowledge of industry standard software for test automation.
Behavioural competencies:
- Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities.
- Communicating Effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point.
- Solving Problems: producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.
