Do you want to dive in the fast-growing industry of drones and get a rewarding experience in a dynamic start-up environment?
At Flyability, we believe that robots should be sent into hazardous places and dangerous situations instead of humans. To support our belief, we created Elios, the world’s first collision-tolerant flying robot that for the first time allows remote entry to complex and indoor spaces. With more than 100 employees, Flyability is the pioneer in the UAV indoor inspection industry. Joining Flyability is not just taking on a new job, it is seizing the opportunity to improve the life of millions of people and build the future of robotics.
To complete our creative and dynamic team in Lausanne, we are seeking a:
Propulsion & Aerodynamics Engineer (100%)
Starting date: as soon as possible
Your role:
For this position, which combines propulsion development and aerodynamic design, you will join the propulsion team, a small team responsible for the full propulsion drivetrain of Flyability’s UAVs, from batteries down to ducted fans.
You will work with your team members on a daily basis in a scrum context to push the boundaries of flight time, maximum thrust and noise reduction. You will be responsible for designing, testing and validating propulsion components, integrating them into prototypes and products, managing suppliers, and driving aerodynamic optimization of ducted fans.
You will be tackling the many propulsion related challenges and help us push the boundaries of what UAVs can do in indoor environments. You will contribute to various aspects of the propulsion drivetrain across different domains, including research, testing, design, industrialization, and serial life activities post-launch.
Your specific focus will depend on the projects, their current phase, and overall company priorities. You are expected to broaden your scope when needed and help on other parts of the propulsion drivetrain as well such as batteries.
What you will own:
- Designing and optimizing ducted-fans, predicting power consumption, and analyzing drag and airflow effects using our in-house simulation code.
- Improving and further developing our simulation code to cater future needs.
- Testing, validating, and documenting propulsion components (motors, ESCs, ducted-fans).
- Selecting, sourcing, and integrating propulsion components into prototypes and products.
- Managing suppliers and spreading best practices for propulsion use and integration.
- Combining components for maximum performance and minimal risk, driving DFMEA for propulsion parts.
- Defining QC protocols, performing environmental/aging tests, and supporting production debugging.
- Maintaining, improving and designing propulsion workshops and testing setups.
Your profile:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s in Aerospace, Mechanical, or related field.
- At least two years of experience with drone propulsion systems, aerodynamics, and component integration from early development phase down to industrialization or experience from a similar domain.
- Hands-on skills with lab testing and data analysis.
- Experience with risk management and supplier management during the full product development cycle of a project.
- Eye for details, independent mindset and excellent problem-solving skills.
- Very good level of English. French or any additional language is an asset.
Flyability is a young Swiss company that values independent thinking combined with a collaborative spirit. Every day, you will have the opportunity to share your ideas and contribute to solving problems. We all work together, and each voice is important to move forward.
