About the job
EYE & DISEASES
Everything important about your most important sensory organ
The anatomy of the eye
The eye, the most important human sensory organ, is a "little ball" with a diameter of 2 cm.
In cooperation with the brain, it allows visual perception. The eye is also referred to as the mirror of the human body, which can be used for early diagnosis or monitoring of general diseases, e.g. diabetes.
How our eye works
"Seeing" is the most complex of our six senses.
For our brain to form an image of the environment, the eye must convert light into nerve impulses, which are then transmitted via the optic nerve.
Different parts of the eye have special tasks.
Refractive errors
Refractive errors are not eye diseases; rather, they are a faulty refractive power of the eye, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness. In this case, the incoming light rays are not focused pointwise on the retina, so that a blurred image is created when looking. Refractive errors are successfully and permanently corrected by glasses, contact lenses, and nowadays increasingly with the help of refractive surgery.
Eye diseases
The likelihood of an eye disease steadily increases with age.
Between the ages of 52 and 64, 50% of the population have a more or less pronounced cataract; sometimes without noticing any visual disturbances. Between 65 and 75 years, it is already well over 90%.
After reaching the age of 75, half of those affected perceive visual impairments or have already undergone surgery.
