The Legal Library of the University of Basel is the largest specialized library of the university and belongs to the traditional Faculty of Law, which looks back on over 565 years of history. With around 135,000 books, over 300 study places, and a dedicated team of 9 employees, it is a central place for teaching, research, and study.
Due to the retirement of the current position holder, we are looking for a committed and service-oriented personality as Head of the Legal Library starting May 1, 2026.

Your tasks

Responsibility with scope for design
As Head of the Legal Library, you will take on leadership in the following areas:

• strategic, personnel, and operational management of the library
• optimization and further development of library services for students, researchers, and lecturers
• media selection and collection development focusing on legal literature in close coordination with the needs of the faculty
• archiving of older collections
• representation of the library in university and national specialist committees as well as networking with other legal libraries in Switzerland
• responsibility for infrastructure, budget, and process design

Your profile

Professional depth meets service orientation
You bring with you:

• a university degree in law, ideally complemented by training as a scientific librarian or training as a scientific librarian with proven affinity for the legal field
• profound knowledge of the requirements of legal teaching and research
• several years of experience in scientific libraries in the R&D area
• a strategic and conceptual way of thinking
• strong skills in dealing with people in a professional environment with trust
• a confident appearance and a fine sense for communication
• good English skills and digital competence (digital library services, e-media, AI), French skills are an advantage
