JOB OBJECTIVE
The second captain is the captain's right hand. He is responsible for the stability and safety of the ship in compliance with all legal regulations. He ensures that passengers feel comfortable and serves as a role model for the entire crew.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Safety
- Overall responsibility for safety on board
- Compliance with guidelines, instructions (nautical manual), and applicable rules
- Co-responsibility for impeccable cleanliness, hygiene, and order on board
- Testing, use, and control of all safety devices (fire extinguishers…)
- Organization and execution of safety drills
- Management and control of the logbook
- Training new crew members in their duties and in their safety role
Navigation
- Adherence to schedules and planning to avoid incidents
- Reasonable use of all energy resources (lubricants…)
- Professional and safe direction of the ship
Specific Missions
- Train new crew members and ensure that company standards are met
- Train new officers
- Organize and regularly conduct ship inspections
- Participate in relevant company meetings and training
- Maintain good contact with authorities, ports…
- Manage the sun deck according to safety needs and passenger expectations
- Check the condition of mooring lines and cables on a weekly basis
- Ensure that crew members wear personal protective equipment (life jackets, safety shoes, helmets…)
- Assign and control work related to the nautical part
PROFILE SOUGHT
- At least two years of experience as a third captain
- Interest in continuing education (e.g., language skills, certificate extension)
- Independent and flexible
- Decision-making ability, initiative, assertiveness
- Strong team spirit and leadership
- Ambitious and persevering
- French and English required, German an asset

- License for the Rhine: km 1,000 – 500 (Amsterdam – Mainz)

Navigating on the Seine, Rhône, and Garonne
- Unlimited length
