About the job

Polymechanics manufacture tools, device parts, and production equipment from metal, plastic, or composite materials, ranging from the size of a watch screw to the size of a turbine wheel. They work on (partly computer-controlled) lathes, milling, drilling, and grinding machines. Professionals program and operate machines, monitor production, commission systems and devices, and maintain them.

Requirements for the 4-year training

• Completed secondary school
• Good performance in geometry and mathematics
• Interest in machine work and metal processing
• Understanding of technical contexts and mechanics
• Manual dexterity and a good sense of touch
• Spatial imagination
• Precise and careful working method

Future prospects

• Completion of the vocational baccalaureate (BMS) during or after the apprenticeship
• Professional examination as automation specialist, manufacturing specialist, aircraft mechanic, or technical clerk
• Advanced professional examination as industrial foreman
• Technician HF, e.g., specializing in mechanical engineering, production or operations technology, electronics, product and process design
• Engineer BSc FH, e.g., specializing in mechanical engineering, systems engineering, or mechatronics
