Head of Cologne / Zurich Treaty Claims
Job Description
Assist in the creation of an “optimal” Property and Casualty Claims organisation, building on the resources in the network of Hubs in order to create a market leading service proposition to both external clients and internal stakeholders.
As a member of SCOR Global P&C’s worldwide Claims Department the Claims Manager will be
- in charge of all Non-Life Reinsurance Claims emanating from the business underwritten in Cologne (German, North European and South East European markets), Zurich (excluding Global Lines) and Milan
- comply with reporting and control duties towards Senior Claims Management
Responsibilities
- Assist Head of UK, Germany, ME&A Claims in the development and delivery of claims strategy for Property and Casualty treaty losses as part of wider group claims strategy
- Assist in the review of resources in hubs / offices within areas of responsibility and make recommendations for change to enhance and optimise service capability and delivery, where responsibility exists or when requested by senior management
- Primarily responsible for all Non-Life Claims deriving from reinsurance treaties underwritten in Cologne, Zurich (excluding Global Lines) and Milan, particularly to ensure
- the adequateness and accuracy of reserves
- that claim payments are only made if coverage under the reinsurance treaties is given and amounts are appropriate
- Assist in the handling of German language SBS claims when required and as instructed.
- Evaluating, developing, reporting on and resolving complex and/or higher value individual claims, ensuring Underwriters are advised of any contractual/legal issues
- Personally direct and coach individual claims teams, where appropriate, ensuring alignment with existing processes and deliver a uniform and enhanced claims service for EMEA Property and Casualty treaty losses
- Approving financial transactions on claims within his/her authority
- Oversee program of audits/reviews both locally and on major accounts to raise level of actuarial confidence in the reserves for the EMEA Property and Casualty area
- Anticipate client needs and expectations and deliver superior customer service
- Plan/prepare and implement annual client visiting/audit plan
- Represent SCOR at internal and external forums
- Report major losses and/or Natural Catastrophe Events to the Claims Operation team consistent with internal guidelines
- Work effectively with others within the Claims department, particularly with other Claims Experts and those staffing Technical Accounting/Administration units, to ensure prompt turnaround and response to internal and external stakeholders
- Analyse claim activity, trends and unusual features communicating with the senior claims management team, appropriate underwriting teams and P&C board where applicable
- Increase the profile of EMEA Property and Casualty treaty claims within SCOR by developing relationships with all senior stakeholders
- Collaborating and assisting in account management, often with other internal departments representatives including Underwriters, TA (Technical Accounting), Pricing and Reserving Actuaries
- Review clauses and wordings in co-operation with Underwriting and the Legal Department
- Liaise and support the claims departments in other SCOR hubs/branches as required and appropriate
- Keep abreast of claims and industry developments/trends in order to maintain a high level of expertise
- Coach, mentor and assist in the training of direct reports and more junior staff where appropriate
- Strict adherence to internal controls and procedures
- Participate in projects as required
Qualifications
- Senior insurance/reinsurance professional Claims handling plus experience of portfolio management
- Extensive experience of the European insurance markets within responsibility
- Experience of managing complex claims within assigned business areas
- Excellent working knowledge and experience of local and exposed territories
- Demonstrate high level of technical competence in the managing and evaluation of claims
- Knowledge of insurance regulation and legislation across affected jurisdictions
- Excellent knowledge of legal principles, policy wordings and insurance market practice relevant to the management, handling and reserving of claims
- Good IT skills including Word, Excel and Power Point
- Trustworthy, honest, high ethical and personal standards
- Outcome focused, self-motivated, enthusiastic and energetic
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills
- Collaborative, teamwork attitude
- Good analytical skills with attention to detail
- Comfortable with dynamic and fast paced work environment
- Can promote SCOR Global Claims Service

- University degree or equivalent further educational qualification from a recognised university or college or alternatively, solid working experience in the industry;
- Relevant professional qualification (preferred but not essential);
- Further vocational training as appropriate
