About the job
ICL (IMPLANTABLE CONTACT LENSES), UP TO 50 YEARS
[1/2]
ICL - Implantable contact lenses for patients up to 55 years old
From about the age of 21, most vision defects such as nearsightedness/farsightedness and astigmatism stabilize. Almost all types of refractive errors (except presbyopia), no matter how severe, can be corrected using implantable contact lenses ("Implantable Contact Lens" or ICL).
During the surgery, the ICL is inserted through a 2.8mm small, self-sealing incision (i.e., no stitches are required) into the eye in front of the natural lens and behind the iris. This lens is not visible from the outside. Visual recovery usually occurs quickly (most can work normally the next day) and painlessly. Although the ICL procedure is considered largely safe and effective, it must be taken into account that it is an operation on a healthy eye.

The eye laser surgery was cheap – then she almost went blind.
To get rid of glasses or lenses, nearsighted people have their eyes lasered. In 5 percent of cases, something goes wrong. Just like with Maja Hauser (32) from Glattbrugg.

Betterview, market leader for laser eye treatments in Switzerland, faces several customer complaints about the results and side effects of its procedures. The company and one of its alleged co-founders deny these allegations.
On this overview page, find information from international scientific studies about the implantable contact lens ICL and its advantages compared to laser surgery.
A rigorous (FDA-controlled) study on 629 eyes implanted with an ICL aimed to analyze effectiveness and side effects/complications. Patients were observed for 3 years after the surgery.
Key findings:
Good visual performance: 49% of patients saw even better than before with glasses or contact lenses.
High accuracy and stability: the ICL lens precisely corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism. Even after 3 years, 99% of eyes were within ±1.0 diopters of the refractive target, and visual acuity remained stable.
Low complication risk: one eye (0.16%) developed a cataract (successfully operated later) and in two eyes (0.32%) the ICL was too large and had to be replaced with a smaller ICL – no severe complications such as permanent corneal damage occurred.
