To enable all children and teachers to have a good start in kindergarten, the canton of Thurgau will introduce selective compulsory preschool language support in 2024.
Currently, the parents of two-and-a-half-year-old children have received a questionnaire for language assessment from the Kreuzlingen school community. Since it is not known which family language (first language) is spoken at home, all families must fill out the questionnaire. This is available in 14 languages and will be evaluated by the Office for Public Education. Children with a need for support in the German language will be required to attend a program one year before entering kindergarten. The school community is responsible for coordinating a care offer. The integrated language education takes place in playgroups, daycare centers, after-school care, or family day care. The school community collaborates with various Kreuzlingen institutions. Here, children are playfully guided by trained care staff and also come into contact with German-speaking children. The care offer includes 4 hours per week.
The goal is to support foreign-language children in the German language one year before entering kindergarten so that they can enter kindergarten with better German skills.
