As of February 1, 2027, or at a date to be agreed upon, a position for a Professor of Archaeology of the Roman Provinces is to be filled at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Bern.
The selected candidate must present a research profile recognized at the international level and demonstrate excellence in teaching. Their area of expertise will cover the archaeology of the Roman provinces, with a specialization in the northern and western regions of the Roman Empire. A chronological focus on the earliest periods as well as particular attention to transformation processes are desired.
An in-depth mastery of empirical and digital research methods will be an asset.
The recruited person will be responsible for representing the archaeology of the Roman provinces in teaching, covering its full thematic, chronological, and methodological scope. They must also demonstrate proven experience in university didactics, archaeological field research, team management, and securing external funding.
Active involvement in the life of the Institute and the new department is expected, as well as close collaboration with cantonal and federal archaeological services. The willingness to develop interdisciplinary cooperation within the Faculty and with the research centers of the University of Bern is also desired.
For obtaining a position as a full or associate professor, a habilitation or equivalent scientific achievements are required. For an assistant professor position with tenure track, an advanced habilitation project or equivalent accomplishments are expected.
