About the job
Official Veterinarian 90%The Veterinary Office of the Canton of Zurich is committed to animal welfare and animal health. It contributes to ensuring the well-being of animals and the quality of animal-based food products. As of May 1, 2026, or by arrangement, we are looking for you as an official veterinarian for our department "Animal Health and Food Safety".
Tasks
You can expect a highly diverse official veterinary profile in the Animal Health and Food Safety department: You conduct slaughter animal and meat inspections in small and large slaughterhouses and check the process flows regarding animal welfare and hygiene. In the case of on-farm and pasture killings, you take on tasks both in the approval process and in later inspections of the conditions. The profile is rounded off by your involvement in disease control. You handle import and export applications, take samples for monitoring programs, and enforce the necessary animal disease control measures in affected animal holdings. The profile is characterized by a varied daily routine between field assignments and office work, with the focus of the activity on small slaughterhouses and disease control, and a small portion of work at the large slaughterhouse is planned. With your expertise and willingness to shape, you contribute to continuously optimizing and modernizing our processes so that the demanding tasks can continue to be fulfilled according to legal standards.
Requirements
For this demanding activity, you bring, in addition to veterinary training, further training as an official veterinarian or are willing to complete it. You find it easy to communicate in German with different stakeholders and to explain decisions comprehensibly as well as to convey facts orally and record them in writing. You quickly grasp tasks and contexts and find effective solutions – even in controversial situations. You enjoy working in a team, take responsibility, and bring a healthy assertiveness. You find your work meaningful, which motivates you to commit daily to animal welfare as well as healthy animals and people. You work independently and in a structured manner. Early work assignments are no problem for you, and you have a category B driving license.
Offer
- Responsible task profile at the important interface of food safety, animal health, and animal welfare
- Motivated team with helpful colleagues
- Opportunities to shape your own work area
- Training and development opportunities
- Social benefits and employment conditions according to cantonal guidelines
