The Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Basel wishes to fill, starting from 1 February 2027 or a date to be agreed upon, a 50% professorial chair in old French and general literature, with a focus on humanism.
Depending on qualifications, the successful candidate will be appointed as Assistant Professor on the tenure track (TTAP), Associate Professor, or Full Professor.

Your position
We are looking for a person
- capable of teaching and conducting research on all aspects of French literature from the Middle Ages to the end of the 17th century, with tangible expertise in the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance (due to Basel's historical role in humanism).
- This person must master a diverse range of theoretical and methodological approaches and be able to question the current relevance of humanism.
- They will participate in the transversal teaching and interdisciplinary research supervision programs offered by the Department of Linguistics and Literature at the BA, MA, and doctoral levels. They will also contribute to the faculty's interdisciplinary networks dealing with early modernity (research clusters Europa im globalen Kontext and Mittelalter/Renaissance/Frühe Neuzeit).
Your profile
- Candidates must demonstrate excellent publications and sustained research activity since obtaining their doctorate (evaluation of this record taking into account their academic seniority).
- They have teaching experience and can offer students and doctoral candidates stimulating and innovative pedagogical supervision.
- Previous acquisition of funding for projects will be an advantage.
- In addition to good teamwork skills and participation in university administration tasks, the ability to teach French at the highest level is essential.
- A good command of German or English is also desirable and, if lacking, must be acquired quickly.
