About the job
Despite the rejection of the initiative for a future of the young socialists, the SP welcomes that thanks to the JUSO initiative, the ever more extreme concentration of wealth was discussed. This inequality exacerbates the climate crisis and poses a danger to democracy. Now the Swiss voters have also, fortunately, clearly rejected the Service-citoyen initiative today. For SP Switzerland, it is clear that the citizens have sent a strong signal that women should not have to do even more unpaid work.
"The Service citoyen is a sham that was sold as equality," says Linda De Ventura, SP National Councilor. "We are therefore pleased that the population did not fall for it and rejected the initiative. It would have led to dumping wages in already heavily affected sectors and to an increase in the unpaid workload for women."
"The signal is clear," adds SP National Councilor Andrea Zryd. "We must strengthen care, education, and agriculture with qualified workers, higher wages, and a real appreciation of care work." SP Switzerland is also committed within the alliance to protect civil service, which is being attacked by right-wing parties, so that these areas are not further weakened.
On the other hand, the population also rejected the initiative for the future of the young socialists. "Unfortunately, the opponents' campaign had an effect: with the threat of leaving Switzerland and the loss of jobs, the super-rich once again prevented a fair taxation of their mega-inheritances," states SP National Councilor David Roth.
On the other hand, SP and Juso have succeeded in showing the real connection between extreme wealth and global warming, which is becoming increasingly dangerous and expensive for the general public. SP co-president Cédric Wermuth emphasizes: "As long as the super-rich continue to gain power, polluting the environment with their private jets, yachts, and investments in fossil fuels without paying their share, SP Switzerland will continue to fight for more tax and social justice and engage in climate protection."
