About the job
Company Description
At CERN , the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Job Description
Introduction
Join a multidisciplinary project team designing, fabricating and testing a new generation of components for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).
Be in charge of fabricating the new HL-LHC cryogenic distribution lines (QXL), relying on a wide range of technologies, either at CERN or through subcontracting in industry.
Fabrication methods, state-of-art machining, sheet-metal forming, welding, pressure vessels, ultra-high vacuum technology, contract management and fabrication follow-up, safety, reliability, product lifecycle management are just a few of the key words related to this position.?
Functions
- Manage the fabrication of mechanical components and assemblies subcontracted to CERN industrial suppliers for the Cryogenic Distribution Lines for the HL-LHC project.
- Lead activities propaedeutic for fabrication, such as defining and procuring suitable raw materials and standard components, prepare fabrication sequences and welding procedures (welding book) and define QA-QC in line with relevant standards.
- Contribute to the mechanical design of components and equipment for accelerators, focusing on manufacturing drawings, for the Cryogenic Distribution Lines for the HL-LHC project.
- Participate in a multi-technology project, in close interaction with other engineering teams and services.
- Provide technical advice to stakeholders on fabrication methods and design (design for manufacturing).
- Prepare and manage documentation such as technical specifications, presentations, and technical reports,
- Report on project activities advancement, providing time, costs and resources estimates for fabrication.
Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Mechanical Engineer or a related field.
International Welding Engineer (IWE) Diploma (desired).
Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in mechanical fabrication and related methods and processes particularly welding as well as machining, metal sheet working and mechanical assembling, applying industrial standards, in a professional context within industry or research centres.
- Demonstrated experience with quality management processes: knowledge of quality control procedures and standards applicable to mechanical production such as metrology, NDT.
- Demonstrated experience in reading and interpreting technical drawings relying on ISO GD&T standard.
- Experience in preparing technical reports and technical specifications.
- Experience in fabrication of pressure vessels, vacuum chambers and cryogenics applying relevant International Standards (e.g. PED, EN 13480, EN 13445) would be an asset.
- Initial experience in coordinating fabrication projects, from design-for-manufacturing studies through prototyping, testing, and production follow-up would be an asset.
Technical competencies:
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: ISO dimensioning and tolerancing;
- Contract management;
- Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation;
- Knowledge and application of joining techniques: welding;
- Design and construction of cryostats.
Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
- Managing Self: using time efficiently and effectively.
