Retinal Surgery
In every operation on the retina, the vitreous body (gel-like substance inside the eye) is first removed to make the retina easily accessible.
The vitreous body is especially important embryologically, but becomes increasingly liquid over the course of life and no longer has any significant function. The removal of the vitreous body is also called vitrectomy.
During retinal surgery, particularly thin instruments and lighting elements are introduced into the eye through openings that are only 0.6 mm in size.
In many cases, at the end of the retinal surgery, a resorbable gas is injected into the vitreous cavity to additionally support the eye in the first days/weeks after the operation. This gas is absorbed over days and weeks.
In the first days after the procedure, the patient must not stay above 1,000 meters altitude, as the gas would expand and increase the eye pressure.
