SIKJM Annual Conference 2024: Things exist!
Non-fiction books for children and young people
September 17, 2025, Volkshaus Zurich
The great universe of astonishing
Details: Non-fiction book trends
Lecture by Gina Domeniconi and Aleta-Amirée von Holzen
Non-fiction books not only convey knowledge but are always also narrative works. Their fundamentally hybrid character repeatedly allows new combinations of factual and
fictional elements. The current non-fiction book landscape thus presents itself as extremely diverse in terms of topics and genres. It is noticeable that many authors focus both on particular curiosities and on complex contexts, and that current non-fiction books address taboo topics as joyfully as carefully or adopt unexpected perspectives and
narrative viewpoints. The lecture shows, using selected examples, how non-fiction books inspire amazement in their readers with knowledge and wit, empathy and a spirit of discovery.
