Mission
Our group (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. https://lifmet.epfl.ch/wagnieres/')) invites applications for a post-doctoral position to advance photobiomodulation (PBM) methods. The project aims to develop and optimize radiometric and spectral protocols, and to validate metabolic readouts in vitro and in vivo, in order to boost the mechanistic understanding and translational potential of PBM therapies.
Main duties and responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Design, execute, and evaluate experiments to optimize spectral and radiometric parameters in PBM.
- Develop, validate, and quantify metabolic assays (e.g. fluorescence imaging/FLIM, respiration assays) in cell culture and preclinical models.
- Build, calibrate, and maintain optical instrumentation and measurement setups, ensuring measurement reproducibility.
- Lead data analyses, maintain reproducible pipelines, and interpret results in mechanistic and biological context.
- Write manuscripts, present results, and, possibly, contribute to project reporting and grant writing.
- Collaborate closely within a small, multidisciplinary research team, including potential industrial/ clinical partners.
- Mentor students or interns, and engage in general lab and safety responsibilities.
Profile
- PhD in (bio)physics,or a related discipline, with strong experience in cell biology
- Proven hands-on expertise in experimental biomedical optics, and mechanistic insight into light-tissue / metabolism interactions
- Demonstrated experience in assessing metabolic activity in vitro and/or in vivo (e.g. imaging, spectroscopy, biochemical assays)
- Excellent scientific communication (oral & written) in English
- Collaborative mindset, open to new ideas, and ability to work across disciplines.
- Affinity for hands-on work with biological samples
Desirable / advantageous assets
- Prior work in photobiomodulation, photomedicine, or optical therapeutics.
- Experience in optical imaging (confocal, FLIM, multiphoton), spectroscopy, radiometry, or custom instrumentation.
- Background in in vivo models, imaging-guided therapies, or translational research.
- Proficiency in statistical data analysis (Python, Matlab, R, etc.).
- Knowledge of French is an advantage.
We offer
- A stimulating, international environment at one of Europe’s premier research institutions
- Access to state-of-the-art core facilities in optics, imaging, and bioanalytics
- Competitive salary as per EPFL / SNSF guidelines and excellent working conditions
- Opportunity for impactful, translational research and engagement with industrial/ clinical collaborators
- Mentorship, professional development, and a collegial, collaborative team
