About the job
EYE SURGERY
Dr. med. Kristof Vandekerckhove performs over 5,000 surgical procedures annually
Cataract
In cataract surgery, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens (intraocular lens). Most patients can read and see perfectly again after the surgery with the appropriate glasses.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma is incurable – however, the progression of the disease can at least be stopped or delayed. Usually, special eye drops are initially used to counteract the progression of the disease. If the intraocular pressure is too high or the eye drops are not tolerated by the patient, surgery becomes necessary.
Laser Treatments
The laser devices at Vista Alpina Eye Clinic serve various purposes: there are devices for applying laser spots on the retina, e.g., in cases of diabetes-related retinal disease or retinal holes. Other laser devices are used to treat posterior capsule opacification or to prevent certain types of glaucoma.
Retinal Surgery
In cases of retinal detachment, the retina can usually be successfully reattached surgically. Furthermore, retinal surgery includes the operative removal of severe vitreous opacities (e.g., bleeding in diabetic patients). A third important application area of retinal surgery at Vista Alpina Eye Clinic involves the removal of fine adhesions and membranes on the retina (epiretinal gliosis).
