About the job
Head of Forest Resources and Forest Management Research Unit 90 – 100% (m/f/d)
The Forest Resources and Forest Management research unit is committed to the collection, analysis, evaluation, and creation of development forecasts for forest resources. The goal is to improve understanding of the state of the forest and to develop scientifically based solutions for its sustainable management in the 21st century. The National Forest Inventory NFI forms a key pillar of the research unit. Due to retirement, we are looking for a position starting April 1, 2026, or by agreement
As an internationally recognized personality, you will lead the research unit with enthusiasm and skill. Coordinating and promoting the six research groups with around 80 employees and managing your own projects are also part of your diverse and responsible tasks. You will acquire third-party funding, maintain interfaces with other research areas, and further develop the topic of forest resources and forest management within the framework of the WSL strategy and the ETH domain environment. You will engage in collaboration with forestry authorities and professional organizations at the national and international levels and promote knowledge transfer and implementation at the interface between research and practice.
You have several years of experience in leading research groups as well as managing larger projects and have a proven track record in developing and financing research projects and an established network in your field. You are an initiative-taking, inclusive, and committed personality with negotiation skills. You can convincingly communicate your forward-looking vision for the further development of the research unit, with clear communication in English and at least one Swiss national language being helpful.
