La Faculté des Sciences de la Société et son Institut de la Gouvernance de l’Environnement et du Développement Territorial ouvrent un poste de candidat-e au doctorat (CANDOC) à 75%, sur les questions urbaines en Afrique. La recherche de doctorat sera conduite sous la direction d’Armelle Choplin et dans le cadre du projet “Vertical Africa: Visualizing Urban Change, Negotiating Power, Designing Sustainable Cities (VERTICAF)», financé par le Fonds National Suisse (FNS) et co-dirigé par les professeur.es Armelle Choplin (UNIGE), Didier Péclard (UNIGE), et Jerôme Chenal (EPFL), en partenariat avec les Universités de Dakar, Kigali et Luanda.

Le projet Vertical Africa (VERTICAF) se propose d’analyser les dynamiques de verticalisation des villes africaines et leurs conséquences sur l’avenir urbain en Afrique. Il combine analyse spatiale, science politique, architecture et études urbaines afin d'étudier comment la croissance verticale transforme les villes sur les plans environnemental, social et politique.

Il sera mené dans trois villes – Dakar (Sénégal), Kigali (Rwanda) et Luanda (Angola) – avec une approche comparative de zones urbaines clés, incluant les centres historiques, les zones périurbaines et les agglomérations satellites.

La contribution scientifique de VERTICAF est triple: (1)Développer des méthodes de mesure de la verticalité et de son impact dans des contextes de données rares, en Afrique et ailleurs. (2)Documenter, théoriquement et empiriquement, les interactions entre la croissance verticale, le capitalisme, la gouvernance, les inégalités et la vie quotidienne. (3)Co-concevoir des modèles plus durables et inclusifs pour l'avenir des villes africaines, qui représenteront un défi majeur pour la gouvernance mondiale d'ici 2100.

Dans le cadre du projet VERTICAF et du doctorat proposé, il s’agira de mener une recherche sur Dakar et Kigali sur les thématiques suivantes :

• Construction et matérialité urbaine
• Foncier, informalité et étalement urbain
• Immobilier, investissement, capitalisme et finance
• Habitat, architecture et transformations des formes urbaines
• Infrastructures et développement urbain
• Gouvernance, aménagement et planification urbaine
• Pratiques urbaines quotidiennes, inégalités sociales
• Transitions urbaine, territoriale et écologique
• Approches postcoloniales et décoloniales des pratiques urbaines dans les Suds
• Approche de l’écologie politique urbaine

Le ou la candidat-e retenu-e s'engage à:

• Réaliser une thèse de doctorat dans l'un des champs développés au sein de l’Institut de la Gouvernance de l'Environnement et du Développement Territorial (mention aménagement et urbanisme ou mention environnement et développement durable). Le sujet sera à définir en concertation avec le ou les directeurs/trices de thèse.
• Participer activement aux différentes activités du projet (recherche et administration), aux ateliers, aux conférences internationales, à la recherche de terrain ainsi qu’aux publications scientifiques et celles orientées vers les politiques publiques.
• Participer au programme doctoral de géographie de la Conférence Universitaire de Suisse Occidentale et aux activités d'animation de la recherche de l’Institut de la Gouvernance de l'Environnement et du Développement Territorial, ainsi que du Geneva Africa Lab.

Titre et compétences exigés

• Titulaire d'un Master en Géographie, Urbanisme, Études urbaines, Sociologie, Anthropologie, Science Politique, etc. ou titre jugé équivalent
• Excellente maîtrise du français et de l’anglais (oral et écrit)
• Avoir des compétences et un intérêt manifeste pour la recherche en études urbaines
• Des compétences en cartographie, SIG et analyse spatiale seraient un atout
• Un intérêt pour les méthodes mixtes, l’ethnographie et les méthodes créatives
• Capacité à travailler à la fois de manière indépendante et en équipe
• Connaissance de terrains Suds requise. Une expérience de recherche en milieu urbain en Afrique serait un atout.

The Geneva School of Social Science and its Institute for Environmental Governance and Territorial Development offer a 75% PhD position, focusing on urban issues in Africa. The PhD research will be conducted under the supervision of Armelle Choplin, within the framework of the project “Vertical Africa: Visualising Urban Change, Negotiating Power, Designing Sustainable Cities (VERTICAF)”. VERTICAF is funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and co-supervised by Professors Armelle Choplin (UNIGE), Didier Péclard (UNIGE) and Jérôme Chenal (EPFL), in partnership with the Universities of Dakar, Kigali and Luanda.

The Vertical Africa (VERTICAF) project aims to analyse the dynamics of verticalisation in African cities and their consequences for Africa’s urban future. It combines spatial data science, political science, architecture and urban studies to examine how vertical growth is transforming cities environmentally, socially and politically.

It will be carried out through three emblematic case studies – Dakar (Senegal), Kigali (Rwanda) and Luanda (Angola) – using comparative analyses of key urban areas, including historic centres, peri-urban areas and satellite towns.

VERTICAF’s scientific contribution is threefold: (1) To develop methods for measuring verticality and its impact in contexts where data is scarce, in Africa and elsewhere. (2) To document, both theoretically and empirically, the interactions between vertical growth, capitalism, governance, inequalities and everyday life. (3) To co-design more sustainable and inclusive models for the future of African cities, which will represent a major challenge for global governance by 2100.

As part of the VERTICAF project and the proposed PhD, the research will focus on Dakar and Kigali, addressing the following themes:

• Urban development, construction sector and materiality
• Land tenure, informality and urban sprawl
• Real estate, investment, capitalism and finance
• Housing, architecture and transformation of urban forms
• Infrastructure and urban development
• Governance and urban planning
• Ecological transition
• Everyday social practices, inequalities
• Postcolonial and decolonial approaches
• Urban political ecology approaches

Required qualifications and skills

• Master in Geography, Urban Planning, Urban Studies, Sociology, Anthropology, Political Science, etc., or an equivalent qualification
• Fluency in French and English (written and spoken)
• An interest in questions of urban studies
• Knowledge of the Global South is required. Research experience in an urban context in Africa would be an advantage
• An interest in mixed-methods research, ethnography and creative methods
• Skills in GIS, cartography and spatial analysis would be an advantage
• Ability to work both independently and in a team

The candidate undertakes to:

• Complete a doctoral thesis in one of the fields developed within the Institute for Environmental Governance and Territorial Development (specialising in urban planning and development or in environment and sustainable development). The topic will be defined in consultation with the thesis supervisor(s).
• Actively participate in the project’s various activities, including workshops, international conferences, field research, and scientific and public policy-oriented publications.
• Participate in the doctoral programme in geography at the University Conference of Western Switzerland and in the research activities and training opportunities offered at the Institute for Environmental Governance and Territorial Development and in the Geneva School for Social Sciences

You will design and conduct your own empirical research, situated in the broader SNSF project described above.
