Platform Engineer
Job description:
As a Platform Engineer, you will contribute to the development and maintenance of an in-house Linux distribution for medical devices. Your primary focus will be the next generation of a custom operating system abstraction layer, including a C++ system daemon and plugins that expose OS capabilities through an RPC API.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing and maintaining the custom OS abstraction layer, with a strong focus on the modern C++ backend
- Implementing and enhancing the next-generation system daemon
- Developing plugins that expose operating system capabilities through an RPC API
- Contributing technical expertise to medical instrument and software development projects
- Creating and maintaining C++ unit and integration tests
- Refactoring and improving legacy code to ensure quality and maintainability
- Managing Debian packages, configurations and related platform components
- Collaborating with Linux software engineers and other technical stakeholders
About the customer:
Our client is a globally recognised healthcare and life sciences organisation developing innovative medical instruments and software solutions. You will join a collaborative team of Linux software engineers within its enterprise platform and infrastructure division.
Requirements:
- At least 10 years of hands-on professional experience with modern C++
- Strong experience using Linux as a software development environment
- Master’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience
- Advanced English skills, including the ability to explain technical topics to non-technical audiences
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently
- Quick learner with a proactive, can-do attitude
- Collaborative and team-oriented working style
Nice to have:
- Experience with virtualisation or container technologies, particularly Kubernetes
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines
- Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS
- Infrastructure-as-Code experience, ideally with Terraform
- Experience in embedded software, hardware drivers or ARM platforms
- Knowledge of hardware and software integration
- German language skills
Compensation benefits:
- Workload: 80–100%
- Hybrid working model with approximately 50% onsite presence
- Flexible working hours
- Initial 12-month assignment with the possibility of extension
