EM specialist 80%-100%

We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated EM specialist (TEM and SEM) to join our team. With our instruments we are part of the Interfaculty Microscopy Imaging Center of the University of Bern (Microscopy Imaging Center (unibe.ch)). We have a Talos L120C transmission electron microscope for 2D and 3D imaging at room and cryogenic temperatures and an Apreo 2 Schottky field emission scanning electron microscope with high and low Vac functionality. Instruments for sample preparation, including a cryo-ultramicrotome, critical point drying systems, sputter coating systems and multiple light microscopes are all in-house.
The EM specialist will support users, contribute to method development and be responsible for the two electron microscopes.
The Division of Veterinary Anatomy is part of the Vetsuisse Faculty of Bern and has a teaching assignment in Veterinary Medicine, in the Graduate School of Cellular and Biomedical Sciences and in the Master's program in Biomedical and Precision Engineering.

Responsibilities and main tasks

• Supporting users in the operation of the electron microscopes and data acquisition
• Providing protocols for workflows on instrument usage, efficient data acquisition and processing
• Taking technical responsibility, including continuous, thorough and careful maintenance of EM
• Support and training in sample preparation, further development of state-of-the-art protocols
• Analysis of biological samples (organs, cells, microorganisms)

Requirements

• In-depth experience and expertise in EM data acquisition of biological samples
• In-depth experience and expertise in the preparation of biological samples for EM
• IT-affinity, profound practical skills with computers and networks
• Good technical understanding and affinity
• Ambition to independently optimize protocols for excellent sample processing and imaging
• Willingness and ability to teach and assist users
• Solid organizational skills
• Ability for highly team-orientated performance

Preferred skills and qualification

• Experience in Cryo- Electron microscopy and/or electron tomography is an advantage
