About the job
About machineMD
At machineMD in Bern we’re building neurodiagnostics for the next generation with our neos™ device and oculometrics software. We’re looking for a Requirements Engineer & Feature Owner who enjoys taking ownership: you connect doctors and developers, shape how we define and ship features, and help turn cutting-edge eye-movement data into real impact in the clinic.
We’re on a mission to radically improve the measurement of brain function through standardized, automated, quantitative exams. Our signature product, neos™, is the world’s first non-invasive neurophtalmoscope for fast, automated assessment of eye movements and pupils. Founded at the University Hospital of Bern, Switzerland, we aim to bring the diagnostic quality of a highly trained specialists into secondary and primary care settings everywhere.
Tasks
The Role
As a Requirements Engineer at machineMD, you will play a key role in turning clinical and user needs into shippable software that helps doctors understand the brain faster. Over time, you take on product ownership for new features.
- End-to-End Ownership – act as the bridge between development, clinical, testing, and UX, taking responsibility for features from concept to release, ensuring no gaps remain unnoticed, with support from an experienced team.
- Feature Ownership & Release Management – take ownership of your features in an agile software development process, coordinate with developers and testers, and help prepare releases so changes land safely in the clinic.
- Requirements & Documentation – maintain clear, structured requirements, keep product documentation up to date, and specify new product features in close collaboration with stakeholders.
- Process Improvement – continuously improve how we capture, refine and communicate requirements, keeping things lightweight and effective rather than bureaucratic.
- Growth & Development – you start by mastering requirements engineering and feature ownership, and over time you can grow into adjacent areas such as product management or other roles that fit your strengths and interests.
What We Look For
- Pragmatic Problem-Solver – you look beyond your own role, step in where help is needed, and stay solution-oriented when challenges arise.
- Collaborative Spirit – you’re detail-focused yet pragmatic, effective in a fast-paced, self-organized environment, and comfortable working in a small, cross-functional team where priorities can change quickly.
- Tech–Product Translator – you enjoy talking both to clinicians and developers, translating user and clinical needs into clear, implementable requirements and discussing technical options with the team.
- Shaper Mentality & Growth Mindset – you’re excited to design simple processes from scratch, try them out, and iterate quickly instead of following a big-company playbook. You have the freedom and drive to shape your role and the requirements engineering function itself: model processes as you see fit, leave your mark, and help define how we work.
- Curious Learner – you’re motivated to dive into a new domain like neurodiagnostics and medical software, ask questions, and learn directly from experts and real-world use cases.
Requirements
Qualifications
- You bring roughly 2–5 years of experience in requirements engineering and/or as a product owner in software development, or equivalent experience.
- BSc/MSc/PhD in a STEM field (e.g., computer science, engineering, mathematics, natural sciences) or comparable industry experience in software development.
- Fluent English (minimum strong B2, ideally C1); German language skills are a plus for on-site collaboration.
- Eligible to work in Switzerland (Swiss/EU/EFTA work permit).
- Available for roughly 75% of your time on-site in Bern and committed to our weekly anchor day on Monday.
- Experience with tools like Jira or Confluence, or motivated to get up to speed quickly.
- Experience in medical device development and familiarity with relevant regulatory frameworks (ISO 13485, IEC 62304, ISO 14971) is a plus but not required.
