Head of Operational Safety (Geneva - Switzerland)
Join the FIA and lead the operational and strategic safety evolution in global motorsport. As the Head of Operational Safety, you will play a central role in managing safety regulations, rescue protocols, and emergency procedures, ensuring the highest standards of protection for competitors, officials, and spectators across the world’s leading racing championships.
Working within the Safety department, you will operate in a collaborative environment, managing a dedicated team and a global network of consultants to drive the FIA’s safety strategy and educational roadmap for National Sporting Authorities (ASNs).
MISSIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
OPERATIONAL SAFETY & CLOSED ROADS
- Manage all operational safety matters related to closed road competitions (Rally, Cross-Country, Hill Climb), including the management of the FIA Rally Safety Task Force and Rally Safety Delegates.
- Define and implement operational safety requirements for closed road competitions, focusing on hazard identification and spectator safety zones.
- Liaise with key international stakeholders and event organizers to ensure the application of best practices on the field.
- Propose and supervise the operating budget for the group and identify new business opportunities, including legal and financial frameworks for safety device approvals.
RESCUE, MEDICAL & NEW ENERGIES
- Supervise operational safety for alternative energies (high-voltage, hydrogen, etc.), providing on-track support and decision-making during critical events.
- Manage the development and improvement of rescue protocols, procedures, and equipment in close collaboration with Sporting Departments.
- Oversee the technical rescue standards (extraction protocols) and coordinate with medical rescue specialists to ensure optimal hospital and emergency center protocols.
- Supervise the secretariat of the Closed Road Commission and the Medical Commission, driving agendas and regulatory updates.
STRATEGY, GOVERNANCE & EDUCATION
- Contribute to the FIA Safety Department communication initiatives, acting as a key member of the think tank to maximize global awareness of safety concepts.
- Lead educational initiatives and webinars for ASNs to ensure FIA safety standards are embraced and implemented at the national level.
- Attend FIA Commissions and Working Groups, preparing technical documentation and driving updates to safety regulations.
- Manage a team of 4 permanent staff members and approximately 20 international safety consultants.
PROFILE:
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline.
- At least 10 years of professional experience in Motorsports
- Significant experience with a Motorsport Federation (ASN), Rally/Cross-Country teams, or event organizers is highly desirable
- Strong technical knowledge of motorsport accident prevention, injury mitigation, and first-principles engineering.
- Exceptional communication and educational skills, with the ability to influence and train international stakeholders.
- Proven experience in project management, team leadership, and budget supervision.
- Fluent English (written and spoken) is mandatory; knowledge of other languages is an advantage.
