As of February 1, 2026, a lectureship in Ancient Near Eastern Philology will be available at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences of the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of Bern. The position is limited until July 31, 2030.
The person to be appointed is internationally recognized in teaching and research; furthermore, a research profile in one of the languages of Mesopotamia, Sumerian or Akkadian with its dialects Babylonian and Assyrian is desirable. Both languages should be taught at beginner and advanced levels (with a scope of 5 SWS), and experience in teaching and higher education didactics is required.
The willingness to collaborate within the institute with the archaeological disciplines and within the new department with the disciplines of Classical Philology is expected, and an openness to digital methods in the teaching and research of ancient languages is desired.
A doctorate in Ancient Near Eastern Philology and a second, promising research focus alongside that of the dissertation are prerequisites.
