The Chair of Prof. Dr. Tobias Sutter is part of the Swiss Institute for Empirical Economic Research (SEW-HSG) at the University of St.Gallen.
Our main activities are scientific research and economic policy advice. The strategic success of our institute lies in conducting intensive basic research, which forms the basis for consulting governments and private organisations.
Your tasks
The University of St. Gallen invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in Econometrics / Machine Learning within the SNF-funded project “Convex Q-Learning: Optimal Policy Learning under Distribution Shifts”, led by Prof. Dr. Tobias Sutter.
The project develops new methods at the interface of econometrics, reinforcement learning, and distributionally robust optimization, focusing on data-driven algorithms for optimal decision-making in dynamic environments. The successful candidate will contribute to both theoretical and computational aspects of the research, including recursive stochastic algorithms and their applications in economics and related fields.
Your profile
- Excellent Master's degree in Econometrics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, or a related quantitative field
- Strong analytical and programming skills (e.g., Python, R, Julia)
- Interest in decision making under uncertainty, reinforcement learning, optimization, and/or statistical theory
