The research group Ecology at the Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Basel in Switzerland invites applications for a full-time position at the intersection of science, technology and fieldwork. The research group combines field observations with experiments, remote sensing and modelling to address questions related to alpine and arctic plant ecology, macroecology, biodiversity, biogeography and environmental change.
Your position
The successful candidate will be responsible for the technical management and support of the research group, and contribute to its research activities and team teaching. They will be responsible for the management of the group's website and research data on local servers and GitHub, maintenance and acquisition of field and IT equipment, computation of environmental datasets as well as organizing and conducting field campaigns. In addition, they are expected to collaborate closely with the group members and advise them in terms of coding efficiently and using the HPC cluster.
Your profile
Applicants should hold an MSc or PhD degree in biology, environmental science, data science or related fields. We are looking for a motivated and reliable candidate with a self-organized and solution-oriented work attitude who is interested in contributing to research. Strong organizational skills, the ability to work in teams and a commitment to a collegial and inclusive workplace are essential. Good spoken English is required to interact with all members of the research group and knowledge of German is desirable. Advanced skills in handling large databases and coding in R as well as experience in GIS and using HPC clusters are required, and additional programming languages or experience in using Google Earth Engine are a plus. Candidates should additionally have prior experience in organizing and conducting fieldwork in alpine and or arctic ecosystems, have knowledge in plant species identification, and hold a valid driver's license.
