About the job
Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, the approximately 1,100 employees at Empa make decisive contributions for the benefit of society towards a liveable future. Empa is a research institution within the ETH domain.
Research Engineer Mechatronics for Biomedical Sensor Systems (a)
In the Digital Health Solutions research area, we develop technologies for continuous monitoring of body signals, flexibly tailored to different applications – from medical patient monitoring to occupational safety in demanding environments and elite sports.
In the Biomimetic Membranes and Textiles laboratory, an interdisciplinary team works on innovative, multimodal sensor systems, especially in combination with textile solutions. Our sensor concepts are developed, examined, and validated under realistic conditions. We specifically analyse measurement accuracy, robustness, and long-term stability. In addition to wear trials, we use standardised measurement setups that enable controlled and reproducible tests. Currently, we are also developing a platform for realistic simulation of (patho-)physiological body signals.
Your tasks
- You develop and implement a mechatronic system to simulate various body signals (e.g. ECG; blood pressure, pulse wave, oxygen saturation, respiration), including integration of hardware and software components.
- You plan and conduct experimental validation and verification measurements.
- You create technical documentation (e.g. Standard Operating Procedures) and ensure the quality of the developed systems.
- You support the research team in evaluating sensor systems for capturing body signals.
- You take on the leadership of subprojects and coordinate development tasks as well as collaboration with internal and external partners.
- You contribute to the technical elaboration of project proposals as well as to the presentation and further development of system solutions in laboratory operations.
Your profile
- Master’s or PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field with relevant practical experience.
- Solid technical knowledge in mechanical and electrical systems as well as in the development and application of control units.
- Experience in simulation, data acquisition, processing, and signal quality analysis.
- Basic understanding of physiological signals and interest in biomedical applications.
- Experience in (partial) project management as well as a structured, independent working style.
- Proactive, solution-oriented personality with quick comprehension and very good German and English skills.
Our offer
We offer you the opportunity to apply and further develop your expertise in an application-oriented and innovative research environment. You will work in interdisciplinary teams and cooperate with national and international partners from research and industry. This not only expands your professional know-how but also your personal network and creates an excellent foundation for your further career in research and development.
Empa actively supports you in your professional and personal development and offers an inspiring, collaborative working environment. The position starts by arrangement and is initially limited to three years. In case of positive project development and mutual interest, there is the prospect of continued employment.
