Job description
The Global Studies Institute is an interfaculty centre of the University of Geneva combining the tradition of regional and international studies with developments in global governance. It prioritises interdisciplinarity in the study of international and regional relations in order to better understand the new challenges of the contemporary world as a whole.
It is advertising a doctoral assistant position within the framework of the Bachelor in International Relations (BARI). The candidate must enrol in a Doctorate at the University of Geneva. The terms of reference include tasks related to research in statistics, as well as supervising courses in probability, statistics and mathematics for the BARI.
Job description:
The terms of reference include:
- Devoting 50% of their time to writing a thesis
- Publishing academic articles
- Assisting the Professor responsible for a course within the BARI
- Supervising and marking exams as well as monitoring students
- Participating in the scientific activities of the GSI (conferences, workshops, etc.), particularly doctoral activities (seminars, workshops, study days)
- Participating in national and international conferences
Required qualifications and skills
- Possession by January 2027 of a Master’s degree recognised by the University of Geneva (in mathematics, statistics, theoretical machine learning or an equivalent qualification)
- Competence and interest in the targeted field as well as the willingness to write a doctoral thesis (statistics and another discipline at the GSI or a thesis in statistics at the GSEM), particularly on topics related to functional data analysis and kernel methods (RKHS method)
- Proficiency in English and French (oral and written skills)

Additional information
The candidate will be employed on a two-year contract at 80% which may be renewed for two successive periods, respectively two years and one year at 100%. The maximum duration of the assistant position is five years. The first year constitutes a probationary period during which the employment relationship may be terminated with three months’ notice to the end of a month.
Salary: grade 08/04 to 08/12 at 100% from CHF 68,357 to CHF 81,246 gross per annum, subject to a temporary freeze on progression by decision of the Council of State.
