The Position

We work as part of an interdisciplinary Community of Practice for sustainability in operations. Our mandate is to drive the reduction of consumption of all resources required for product supply in the manufacture of diagnostic instruments.

As an intern in the Instrument Operations Network (ION), you'll collaborate closely with a cross-functional team, including experts from instrument production, logistics, R&D, marketing, and also packaging suppliers to streamline packaging of spare parts, improve material selection as regards sustainability, and define a new best practice.

This internship offers hands-on experience in project management, process improvement, stakeholder engagement, and change management. You'll gain insights into global operations business complexities and play a vital role in shaping operational excellence within the ION organization.

This internship position is located in Rotkreuz, Switzerland, mainly on site but with some flexibility for hybrid working.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and consolidate the results of previous projects related to the packaging of spare parts, which already identified areas of waste and inefficiency

  • Develop an actionable pipeline, outlining specific steps and milestones for improvement

  • Centralize the packaging of spare parts from the current individual production zones, streamlining the process to increase efficiency and reduce waste

  • Research and propose alternative packaging solutions with a lower carbon footprint

  • Develop a systematic approach for the implementation of these alternative packaging solutions, ensuring smooth integration into existing processes and systems

  • Utilize tools such as our "Ecolater" tool or independent databases to calculate the carbon footprint reduction achieved through the implementation of alternative packaging solutions

  • Define key performance indicators (KPIs) to track and report on the improvements made in reducing the carbon footprint

  • Strive for cost savings by identifying and implementing alternatives that not only reduce waste but also result in cost-effective packaging solutions

Who You Are

You are enrolled or have completed your Bachelor’s / Master’s studies at a university, preferably in the field of Environmental Science, Sustainability Management, Industrial Ecology, Operations Management, Business Engineering or similar within the last 12 months and are interested in applying your knowledge in a modern working environment as part of an internship.

Furthermore you are

  • Fluent in English or German, preferably both

  • A confident communicator and a proactive team player

  • Continuously seeking opportunities for process optimization

  • Passionate about driving sustainability initiatives forward in a systematic way

Technical details

The preferred start date for the internship is September 2024. Please state your preferred start date and the desired duration of the internship in your application.

Part-time employment is possible (minimum 60%) if the internship will be for a minimum of 6 months. Shorter durations will require full-time employment.

It is possible to write a thesis during the internship.

The application deadline is April 30th.

Interviews will take place in the second and third week of May (between May 13 and 23).
