Energy Centre
StWZ has built a new energy centre at Mühlegasse in Zofingen near the BZZ primary school, where largely CO2-neutral heat is produced.
The new energy centre was built on the site where the underground wood chip combustion plant used to operate. The old heating centre had become outdated, and the boilers needed to be replaced. The new building emphasises that district heating is an important and forward-looking energy source to supply Zofingen with sustainable energy in the long term. Compared to the previous centre, the new plant produces a larger quantity of heat and also a significantly higher proportion of heat generated from wood. Thanks to new customers, heat sales have increased since 2023 to around 9 million kilowatt hours per year. Since May 2023, around 90 per cent of this has been produced by burning regional wood. Previously, this proportion was 50 per cent. Ideally, 100 per cent of the heat can be supplied by the wood chip heating system. This is made possible by the smaller of the two wood boilers, which covers the lower heat demand in summer and also depends on how cold the winter is. Any peak loads are covered by the gas boiler.
