The Seminar for Cultural Studies and European Ethnology at the University of Basel fosters a dynamic intellectual environment and strives to conduct both conceptually rigorous and empirically grounded and applied research in the following areas: culture, everyday life, politics; globalization, migration, mobility; anthropology of knowledge, science and technology studies; body, senses, health; visual, material, media and digital culture; museum; memory and narrative research.
A position as Senior Research Assistant with a 60% employment rate is to be filled at the seminar starting from the spring semester 2027.

Your Tasks
- Research on visual, material, media and digital culture, museums as well as memory and narrative research, with the aim of habilitation
- Expansion of the seminar's cooperation networks with museums, cultural heritage organisations and collections (e.g. the multimedia archive of Empirical Cultural Studies Switzerland, EKWS) as well as with civil society and artistic actors in Basel and beyond
- Teaching activities (2 semester hours per week), supervision of students and bachelor’s and master’s theses
- Participation in committees and self-administration
Your Profile
- PhD in European Ethnology/Empirical Cultural Studies or Social and Cultural Anthropology
- Research focus on visual, material, media and digital culture, museums as well as memory and narrative research
- Experience in empirical-qualitative research in the European, optionally also non-European context
- Experience in collaboration with museums, cultural heritage organisations, collections, civil society organisations or artistic communities
- Experience in university teaching
- Very good German and English skills, knowledge of Italian desirable
- Independent, structured and team-oriented working style
- Desirable: experience in museum, exhibition or curatorial work or collection management
- Desirable: familiarity with multimedia software (video, sound) and multimodal teaching/exhibition projects

The duration of employment for the senior research assistant position is two years with the possibility of extension for a further four years.
