Postdoctoral Position in Atomic-Scale Quantum Magnetism
The nanotech@surfaces Laboratory is a multidisciplinary team of physicists and chemists working at the forefront of quantum materials and surface science. Utilizing a combination of experimental and computational approaches, we develop and characterize novel functional materials and devices driven by robust nanoscale quantum effects. We are currently seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher fascinated by quantum nanoscience, with a strong interest in surface and spin physics.
Your tasks
You will conduct pioneering research on quantum coherent control of strongly correlated electron systems on surfaces. A particular focus is placed on molecular spin systems, where you can harness quantum correlations of many-body spin systems, enabled by atomically precise bottom-up synthesis. You will work in the laboratory for Quantum Magnetism fully equipped with low-temperature, high magnetic field scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and tuning fork atomic force microscopy (QPlus AFM), integrated with electron spin resonance (ESR) capabilities.
Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated experimentalist who meets the following criteria:
PhD in Physics, Nanoscience, Quantum Science, Electronic Engineering, or a related field
Strong background in solid-state physics, quantum magnetism, surface science under UHV conditions, or quantum nanoscience
Experience in scanning probe microscopy (STM or AFM), ideally with a focus on magnetic nanostructures or spin-resonance techniques
Programming skills in Python or similar languages
A proactive and collaborative mindset, strong problem-solving skills, and excellent communication skills in English
Our offer
We offer an opportunity to join a world-class research team exploring quantum phenomena at the atomic scale. You will benefit from close collaboration with leading experts in chemical synthesis, advanced characterization, and atomistic simulations. Located in the Zurich Area, Empa offers outstanding infrastructure, a broad interdisciplinary environment, and competitive salaries. We are committed to fostering equal opportunities and diversity in science and technology. The position is immediately available upon agreement and is initially limited to one year with the possibility for an extention.
We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
