About the job
Data Engineer 80-100% (m/f/d)
The Avalanche Warning and Warning and Information Systems groups, which are part of the Avalanche and Prevention research unit, are looking for a start in early 2027 or by arrangement
In the SNSF research project THIRST (Towards high-resolution, intelligent, spatio-temporal avalanche forecasting) we are developing new methods to predict avalanche danger more precisely and automatically in the future using physical models, artificial intelligence and spatially high-resolution data. For this, we are looking for a person to build a scalable simulation and data infrastructure to enable large-scale model calculations and efficient access to extensive research data. At the same time, automated and reliable data and model pipelines are to be developed for testing new methods, which will also form the technical basis for their later transfer to the operational avalanche warning service.
Your tasks include building, operating and further developing a scalable simulation and data infrastructure for large-scale, computationally intensive modelling as well as developing efficient solutions for processing, storing and providing large spatio-temporal datasets. You will develop robust and automated data and model pipelines for research and operational live tests and ensure reliable and reproducible model operation through testing, monitoring and quality assurance.
Another focus is on building and operating MLOps processes for automated training and re-training, deployment and inference of machine learning models as well as their management and monitoring. You will work closely with researchers and software developers to further develop and technically implement new scientific methods so that they are prepared for later operational use.
You have a university degree in computer science, computational science, data engineering or a related field and bring solid programming experience, especially with Python. You are familiar with Linux-based development environments and ideally have already worked with technologies such as Kubernetes. Experience in building and operating scalable data and computing infrastructures, preferably in a scientific environment, is also desired, as are knowledge of modern software engineering practices including version control, automated testing, CI/CD and containerisation. Experience with parallel data processing, HPC or operating computationally intensive models is an advantage. You are interested in collaborating with researchers and transferring scientific methods into robust and reliable applications. An independent and structured way of working, teamwork skills and good communication skills complete your profile. Good German and English skills are required; interest in snow and avalanches is an advantage.
The position is initially limited to two years, with a prospect of extension.
Please send your complete application to Ivana Bohac, Human Resources SLF, by submitting the required documents via our application portal. Applications by e-mail or post will not be considered. For questions, Christoph Suter, Head of the Warning and Information Systems Group, Tel. +41 (0)81 417 02 52, will be happy to assist you. At WSL, diversity and inclusion are lived values. We are committed to gender equality and to promoting an open and inclusive working environment.
