The Department of Economic Affairs is at the heart of the economy and currently employs around 650 people. They work in the Office for Economy and Labor, the Agricultural Office, the Cantonal Forestry Office, the Office for Nature, Hunting and Fisheries, the Office for Public Transport, the Office for Data and Statistics, as well as in the General Secretariat.

The Office for Economy and Labor significantly contributes to the development of the canton as a business and employment location. On behalf of the St. Gallen government, it advocates for optimal framework conditions for the economy and provides a wide range of services for companies, employees, and job seekers through the main departments of location promotion, working conditions, and unemployment insurance.
