The ETH Zurich is the place of study, research, and work for around 30,000 people from over 120 countries. The Department of Physics (D-PHYS) pursues a diverse research agenda and a broad teaching program, from exploring fundamental principles of nature to innovative technologies for society. A large part of the approximately 1,500 bachelor, master, and PhD students, postdocs and professors, apprentices, as well as scientific and service staff, are involved in experimental research in one way or another.
The Technical Services have the optimal support of the department's research and teaching tasks as their top priority. The associated D-PHYS Shop provides researchers with around 8,000 technical items. This service on the Hönggerberg campus facilitates everyday research and thus makes a significant contribution to efficient processes.
Due to an upcoming retirement, we are looking for a motivated head for the D-PHYS Shop starting November 1, 2025, or by agreement.
Job description
- The management of the D-PHYS Shop includes: personnel management of two employees, ensuring product availability, maintaining the assortment and searching for new products for sale in the shop, high-quality customer service, conducting price negotiations with suppliers, and responsibility for the inventory of the operations.
- Budgeting, reporting, and controlling of operating resources and projects of the D-PHYS operations on behalf of the head of technical services.
- Support (coordination, maintenance, and further development) of existing databases for internal billing of goods and services to institutes, professorships, and operations, and of the online catalog .
- Active participation in project teams to transfer existing IT tools into new applications.
- Contact person for the procurement of goods for the operations managers of the departments (workshop, laboratory support group, gas liquefaction, training supervisor) and the research groups of the Physics Department.
- Coordination of WTO procurements of machines and equipment and export risk transactions together with central purchasing.
- Member of the specialist group of shop managers and the Material Group Management (MGM) commission of ETH in the function as lead buyer for MGM raw materials, semi-finished, and finished products.
Profile
- A completed technical apprenticeship as well as commercial further training.
- Several years of professional experience in purchasing, warehouse management, logistics, and the commercial sector.
- Good Excel and pivot table skills are required. Confident handling of common MS Office applications as well as interest in new tools and technologies. SAP knowledge is an advantage.
- Interest in the areas of machine elements, tools, installation materials, laboratory, electrical, and electronic items.
- Fluent German skills (spoken and written) and good English skills in speaking and writing.
- An independent, structured, proactive, and reliable working style, high quality awareness, as well as pronounced organizational talent.
- Customer-oriented, friendly, and open personality as well as flexible with a high degree of responsibility.
- Enjoyment of interdisciplinary collaboration and communication within the shop team, D-PHYS, and occasionally across various ETH areas.
