About the Project
In everyday language, people speak of markets and marketplaces, which are two arenas of trade. Marketplaces have been central places of trade for millennia. In the past, they were located in the heart of cities and were not only the scene of economic transactions but also a meeting place for social life, politics, and exchange. Today, trade has changed significantly: many transactions no longer take place at physical locations but online.
This project examines how trade on marketplaces – both analog and online – works. Although modern markets and online trade seemingly have replaced the classic marketplace, it is assumed that there is a historical line between traditional marketplaces and today's digital marketplaces.
