Who are we?

The Archaeological Service of the State of Fribourg (SAEF) identifies, inventories and records archaeological cultural assets.

It supports the administrative procedure concerning remains located within archaeological perimeters and implements excavations and, where appropriate, measures to preserve the remains. It promotes the documentation produced in the form of publications. To raise awareness among various audiences about archaeological heritage, the Service organises open days, lectures and exhibitions and participates in training.

Your missions

• You are responsible for the Medieval and Building Archaeology sector of the SAEF and contribute, with the other sector heads and management, to ensuring the service's missions.
• You coordinate the identification, inventory, protection, safeguarding, documentation, analysis, study, archiving, promotion and mediation of the concerned archaeological cultural assets and mainly carry out administrative and operational tasks. You regularly manage several tasks and projects simultaneously.
• You manage the sector from a managerial perspective, prioritise and direct operations, report and publicly represent your area of activity.
• You ensure, together with the scientific manager who will later be subordinate to you and who will provide scientific direction and support, that the sector's mission is balanced.
• You establish and maintain the framework conditions for the functioning of your sector and the staff assigned to it, while taking into account the service's needs.

Desired profile

• You hold a master’s degree in archaeology, a federal certificate as an archaeological excavation technician or equivalent training. You quickly understand the challenges of preserving medieval archaeological heritage and the heritage buildings of the canton of Fribourg.
• You have excellent references in planning, organising and operational management of preventive archaeology, mastering its processes, ideally also administrative and financial ones.
• Your experience, skills and knowledge enable you to lead and carry out impact assessments, preventive operations and archaeological reports leading to studies, promotion and heritage mediation.
• You possess proven managerial and team management skills.
• You are comfortable in communication and relations with your sector’s staff, the service or external interlocutors. You are solution-oriented, dynamic and enjoy working in a team. You are committed to maintaining a calm and constructive collaborative environment.
• Your professional network allows you to interact and communicate with specialists in your field of activity.
• You master the usual methods, instruments and tools, both analogue and digital, used in the field.
• You have good language skills and great writing fluency; you are a French or German speaker with a good command of the partner language.
• You hold a driving licence.
