The four most common eye diseases
Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
There are different forms of macular degeneration (short AMD = Age-related Macular Degeneration): the dry and the wet form.
A wet AMD can develop from a dry one. Wet AMD progresses more aggressively, faster, and with more serious consequences. The dry form accounts for 85 – 90% of AMD cases. Only wet AMD can (and must) be treated today – if detected early enough.
Keratoconus (Corneal Disease)
Keratoconus is a progressive eye disease in which the cornea, normally round and curved, gradually thins and bulges outwards in a cone shape.
The exact triggers and risk factors are not yet fully understood. However, it is assumed that both genetic predispositions and environmental influences play a role.
