Restoration and Renovation of Historic Parquet Flooring A Second LifeIn the Kolingeviert Zug, one of the oldest quarters outside the inner old town, several properties are owned by the city of Zug. In 2018, the properties Kolinplatz 19 and Kirchenstrasse 3+5 were renovated.
A public vote decided to preserve the historic buildings with their richly furnished rooms and to modernise them. The charm of the spatial atmosphere of the past century had to be preserved. Therefore, all valuable panel and strip parquet floors were carefully dismantled, restored and later reinstalled on the same site. The restored floor coverings were supplemented with materials commonly used at the time of construction and colour-matched. The result is a complete renovation that meets today's requirements for fire protection, earthquake standards and sound insulation in the substructure.

Hans Hassler AG Zug was commissioned to restore all valuable parquet floors. In collaboration with architect Patrick Röösli, the restoration was carefully planned at the end of May 2018. This was followed by discussions, consultations, sampling, sketching and scheduling. All valuable panel and strip parquet floors were carefully dismantled. On the back of the parquet, information about its manufacture from 1922 was discovered, suggesting that the parquet was restored in the same workshop where it was originally made. The company was then called Geb. Risi, Alpnach-Dorf. After removing the old parquet, the individual strips were transported to our partner company Britschgi AG in Alpnach. The panel and strip parquet floors delivered in stacks were sorted, divided, de-nailed, glued and profiled. Damaged elements were newly manufactured and supplemented with matching pieces. At the end of June 2018, we began reinstalling the dismantled parquet. The restored and newly prepared floors were installed in stages by our qualified floor layers onto the subfloor construction, the surfaces sanded and naturally oiled with oxidised Rubio Monocoat oils. First, the mosaic panels in light/dark beech were laid diagonally with a wall frieze. In various rooms, solid beech wood parquet was laid in a herringbone pattern. In July 2018, the old solid long strips in Douglas fir/spruce were laid. Missing strips were supplemented with new raw wood, steamed and colour-matched to the existing strips. In August 2018, the installation of the corner frieze panels in walnut/spruce and the mitre frieze panels in walnut-maple began. With great expertise, attention to detail and joy in beautiful restoration, our parquet layers carried out these works.
