Who are we?

The Archaeological Service of the State of Fribourg (SAEF) identifies, inventories and records archaeological cultural assets.

It supports the administrative procedure concerning remains located in archaeological zones and implements excavations and, where appropriate, measures to preserve the remains. It promotes the documentation produced in the form of publications. To raise awareness among various audiences about archaeological heritage, the Service organises open days, lectures and exhibitions and participates in training.

Your tasks

• Develop comprehensive diagnostics of archaeological objects, define and document appropriate conservation-restoration interventions
• Carry out conservation and restoration treatments, particularly within the inert materials laboratory, respecting the integrity of objects as well as traceability, sustainability and heritage preservation requirements
• Prepare treatment reports as well as scientific articles
• Package archaeological artefacts and ensure their conservation; collaborate in monitoring the condition of archaeological collections
• Ensure archiving of produced documents and their integration into the information system
• Contribute to knowledge transfer by training interns and other collaborators in good conservation-restoration practices, as well as promoting heritage by conducting guided tours for groups
• Collaborate in the preparation, installation and dismantling of exhibitions

Desired profile

• You hold a Master of Arts in conservation-restoration from a university of applied sciences or an equivalent qualification
• You have proven professional experience in the conservation and restoration of archaeological artefacts
• You possess excellent organisational skills and work in a structured, methodical and efficient manner
• You are naturally curious and inventive. You enjoy learning new techniques and developing new skills
• You demonstrate interpersonal skills and ease in communication and relationships with colleagues
• You are comfortable collaborating within a complementary team serving archaeological heritage, and you know how to adapt your methods to existing framework conditions
• Knowledge of information systems (relational databases) would be an advantage
• You are proficient with common office software
• You master French or German and have good knowledge of the other language
