The Forest Region 3 Sargans is characterized by protection forests and includes the forest area of the municipalities of Sargans, Vilters-Wangs, Bad Ragaz, Pfäfers, Mels, Flums, Walenstadt, and Quarten. The 17,700 ha of forest are mostly located on steep slopes up to an altitude of 2000 meters above sea level. 80% of the forest area is publicly owned and 20% is private forest. The average utilization volume is around 40,000 m3 solid wood per year. Management and maintenance are carried out by the forest owners' enterprises as well as other companies. The Forest Council is responsible for the strategic management of the forest region. The Regional Forester manages the operations. Around 12 district foresters report to him/her.
