The Department of Health, with its four offices and five services as well as around 200 employees, ensures the protection, promotion, and preservation of the health of humans and animals. This includes ensuring a high-quality basic medical care thanks to optimal hospital planning in the field of acute somatics and psychiatry, health prevention, consumer protection, and veterinary services.

The Cantonal Medical Office advises the department management, the Department of Health, and other official bodies on matters of health and illness. It deals with diverse health policy and medical issues, implements legal requirements, and develops solutions for current and future challenges in healthcare together with various partners.
