About the job
The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL, with around 600 employees, is part of the ETH domain. It is concerned with the sustainable use and protection of the environment as well as responsible management of natural hazards.
Internship for the Development of a Reference Data Pool for Remote Sensing-Based Tree Species Classification 80-100% (m/f/d)
The Landscape Dynamics research unit analyses and assesses short- and long-term changes in the natural resources of built-up, managed and near-natural landscapes. From 1 August 2026, or by arrangement, the Remote Sensing group is offering a 6-month
The Remote Sensing group is involved in national and international research projects as well as the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI). In the NFI, remote sensing data from various sensors and platforms are used to assess and quantify the condition and changes of the forest. Comprehensive and accurate information on tree species distribution and their changes forms a central basis for various questions. Within this internship, you will support the Remote Sensing group in conducting tree species classifications and their validation.
The focus of the internship is on building a representative reference dataset of the main tree species in the Swiss Plateau. This dataset serves to validate and optimise nationwide tree species maps. You will create an overview of the existing reference data sources and check their spatial coverage and usability for the classification methods. You will identify data gaps and close them through additional data collection by means of aerial image interpretation and on-site surveys. By conducting validation work, you will help iteratively improve the tree species classifications. Collaboration with the forestry authorities of the cantons AG, BE and VD is central to this. Within this internship, you will have the opportunity to work on a current research topic at WSL and deepen your knowledge in the field of tree species classification using remote sensing.
You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with a forestry-related specialisation in environmental natural sciences, geography or a similar field and are familiar with the tree species of the Swiss Plateau. Furthermore, you have knowledge of remote sensing, GIS and data preparation and analysis, and are interested in practical applications. Experience in collaboration with forestry authorities is an advantage. Additionally, you work precisely, independently and reliably and speak both German and English at a good level (C1). Knowledge of a second national language is an advantage.
